HR Advisors Group is in the process of undergoing our five year strategic planning.  This got me thinking that when an organization evaluates their mission, vision, goals or marketing description, it’s important to think about human capital as well.  Does your organization have the talent to be able to meet the defined goals and objectives laid out in a strategic plan?

Every organization should have some sort of employee development plan in place in order to fulfill its mission.  Often, this gets overlooked as companies experience rapid growth. As a company continues to grow its business, it’s extremely important to make sure the employees’ skills and expertise are growing along with it.  If an employee development program is in place and properly performed, a company should be well on its way to meeting set goals and objectives.

I recently read a blog about assessing employee’s performance which I found to be quite helpful in assessing and developing employees.  Strong leaders excel by keeping their pulse on employees’ key responsibilities, delegate work/projects appropriately and review employees’ progress against goals to determine what, if any, additional training or coaching may be necessary to enhance an employee’s skill set. No, it’s not rocket science, but it is imperative that a manager sees this process through from start to finish.  One way to assist is by building a two-way communication process between manager and employee which allows for a more cohesive work environment.  Leaders are receiving progress reports and employees have the opportunity to provide feedback with any problems or concerns that may have surfaced.

When leaders monitor employees’ performance, they are actually performing a mixture of a work and planning review with a developmental planning review.  This process helps to streamline the assessment of the employee’s growth and development.  This allows an organization to build an educated, engaged and empowered workforce which at the end of the day, hopefully assists the company continue to meet its goals and objectives and accomplish its mission.
