Every year at this time, I go through a spring cleaning process at home (of course my husband and teenage children are not as eager and enthusiastic about this process) and we decide what we need to clean up and/or fix around the house. Spring cleaning from a business perspective can be a cleansing process and a great time to evaluate whether your business and HR function is going in the correct direction. It also allows you to discover if there are things that are not important and/or critical that can be pushed aside or tossed away. What does this spring cleaning process look like for your organizations? Here are a few ideas:
- Revisit goals and objectives established at the beginning of the year
- Compare general business goals for the organization to the HR function and/or goals
- Re-establish goals using the SMART Goal Model (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely)
- Re-energize and/or motivate staff after a long winter
- Conduct employee check-ins
- Carry out a management review and ascertain if the organization is meeting its goals
- Evaluate the metrics that have been established and/or put in place
- Ask if you and/or your teams are being held accountable
In a conversation this week with a client, we discussed his organization’s “Spring Cleaning” strategy to take a step back, get out of the weeds and ensure that the organization is moving in the right direction. Each organization’s strategy is different, but no matter what, going through this ‘cleansing’ process can be a step to ensure your organization is on the right track.
