Transactional vs Strategic HR
A few weeks ago, my colleague Cyndi Branciforte and I facilitated a panel session with a group of CEOs from small, medium and large firms about moving HR departments from transactional relationships to strategic counselors.
For most of my career Human Resources within an organization have been viewed as a department to “process” paperwork, manage the employee life cycle from hiring to termination and ensure compliance with federal and local laws. However, over the past few years there has been a fundamental shift among many organizations to move HR into more of a strategic partnership role.
Why? For one CEO, the a-ha moment was the realization that HR was truly […]
The Winter Blues – Don’t Hibernate, Motivate!
It is officially the dead of winter. The days are short, the leaves are gone, and depending on where you live, coats, gloves, and hats may be staples of your lives. People always joke about hibernating during this time of year, and for many of us this happens. However, the truth is, withdrawing from the world can lead to depression and decreased productivity at work. To avoid the “winter blues” it’s important to take extra steps in your work life to remain happy, motivated and productive employees.
The Sun Still Shines
With the days so darn short, many of us find that it’s dark in the morning on the way […]
Avoiding Resolution Fatigue
Every February after I’ve settled into the cadence of the New Year, I take a brief moment to conduct a personal and professional status check on all the resolutions I set for myself at the beginning of the year. Little to my surprise, I found that several I’ve made some progress on, but others got cast aside almost as quickly as they were made.
First thing I do, is not beat myself up. I’m not alone in this issue. Research shows that sixty percent of people keep their resolutions through two weeks, but by week six, that number has dropped to only forty […]

Best Practices Back on the Forefront
I recently visited a client who gave me a tour of their newly remodeled workspace. Among the changes, they decreased the size of their partner offices and changed their conference rooms to create more open space, including a town hall workspace so employees could sit in comfortable chairs and unwind, double as an open lunch area, and host their all-staff meetings. The space was impressive! When I asked my client ‘why’ they made the changes, their reasoning was that by applying new best practices to their physical space, they could create an environment that was stimulating, fun and professional that would have a positive impact on their employees’ […]
Change as the New Normal?
It’s unbelievable that the year is coming to a close. In fact, with the holidays just around the corner, it seems even busier than ever!
I don’t know about you, but I find that the end of the year offers much opportunity to reflect on the past year and goal setting for the coming months. So much has happened in 2017 that has had significant implications for organizations of all sizes that it’s almost overwhelming just trying to take it all in when reflecting on the past months.
At first glance, the list strikes a bleak tone for the coming year, but each issue that organizations find that they will […]
Organizational Sexual Harassment Training Recommendations
If you search online for “Sexual Harassment Training,” you will find 6,530,000 hits in the News section alone. It should come as no surprise that many of these articles have been posted over the past few weeks with fresh allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct coming to light daily across business, politics and entertainment industries . In the wake of what is becoming known as the “Harvey Weinstein Effect,” many employers are scrambling to dust off their sexual harassment policies and offer trainings. Other employers may already have solid policies in place and regularly offer training; however, they are asking themselves, “what can we be doing differently?”
Now, more than […]
The Importance of Families During the Holidays
The holidays to me are always a time of family. We surround ourselves with those we love, people that bring us joy and happiness, with whom we create new memories while reminiscing about days of past. It’s a special time that I look forward to every year.
I reflect often about family during the holidays. I think about how for many of us, our coworkers are family as well. These are people that we see day in and day out, with whom we create and share memories, laugh and cry, celebrate new experiences, and participate in life journeys. Many of my coworkers over the years have become lifelong friends.
The […]
