Many of the younger members of today’s workforce went through high school and college with a minimum requirement of volunteer hours necessary for graduation. This became more than just a requirement for them; it became a way of life. Gen X and Gen Y workers want to continue this practice of volunteerism in their lives through their workplace.
According to an article by Sylvia Ann Hewlett in the February 1, 2013 issue of Forbes, a staggering 88 percent of Gen Y women, 91 percent of Gen X women and 90 percent of female Baby Boomers feel it is important to contribute to their community or the wider world through work. The article goes on to identify large corporations that are involved in volunteer programs that range from one day community service activities to mini-sabbaticals that send employees to developing countries to provide free consulting services.
Although few companies have the luxury of providing mini-sabbaticals, many organizations can provide employees time and opportunity to become involved in their community through service programs supported by the company. Partnering with a non-profit or community service organization and allowing employees paid time off to volunteer can be a win – win – win idea.
The non-profit or community service organization obviously wins in receiving the benefit of highly trained and dedicated professionals to help them in a wide variety of areas. The employee wins in receiving the satisfaction of contributing to the community and the opportunity to gain leadership skills outside of the organization. The company wins by having a more engaged and connected staff as well as leadership development opportunities for staff outside of the office. Another advantage to the company is the public relations benefit of being seen as an organization that doesn’t just take from the community, but also gives back.
So what are you waiting for? If a non-profit or community service organization doesn’t immediately pop into your head, poll your employees for ideas. Find a place (or places) where you and your employees would like to reach out and provide services that will help the community. I promise, it will be a win, win, win experience!
