Most A/E firms today are finding the recruitment and retention of early career professionals—Generation Z—to be challenging. There’s a lot of competition for the same talent, and Gen Z job seekers have more options than ever before. One thing is for sure: the ability to attract, engage, and retain Gen Z professionals is critical for both the near- and long-term success of A/E firms.

In 2007, HR Advisors Group published the groundbreaking ‘Future Leaders Focus’ survey, exploring the nuances of motivation and career satisfaction specific to early career design professionals at that time–the Millennials. In the 17 years since that survey, the world and workforce have changed dramatically. Therefore, we’re planning to conduct a survey of current Gen Z professionals and compare the findings with those of the 2007 survey. Over 700 early career professionals from over 50 firms participated in 2007, which provided us with robust data. Our goal is to match or even exceed the participation for this year’s Gen Z survey.

If you are curious to know what types of questions will be asked in this survey, please click here to view the 2007 survey.

Future Leaders Focus 2007: A Survey of Architects and Engineers

Starting in early to mid-October, we’ll be providing links to a toolkit with an invitation to the survey, including the live online link and instructions. This toolkit can be shared with Gen Z professionals to encourage them to participate. We’ll also provide the full survey results to all participating firms—a fantastic resource for those participating.

In the meantime, please stay tuned for our blog, which is coming out in mid-September featuring generational perspectives of Gen Z in the workplace.
