Go Where Your Candidates Are – Use Social Media for Recruiting
We all know that it’s a candidate’s job market. The economy is booming and competition for quality candidates is growing. If your tried and true job posting sites are no longer drawing the same quality candidates, it may be time to reassess your social media presence.
According to Betterteam, 94% of professional recruiters network and post jobs on social media, and 59% of employees say that an organization’s social media presence was part of the reason they chose their workplace. More than just a passing trend, social media should be incorporated into your overall recruiting strategy.
Why use social media for recruiting? Lot of reasons.
- According to a recent […]

Down the Yellow Brick Road – Provide a Clear Path to Career Success
During the last several years, we have seen an increase in clients wanting our help to develop career paths. There are several reasons: the loss of knowledge as baby boomers retire and the need to transfer this knowledge to the up and coming leaders and workforce of today… the increase in technology and how it impacts so many jobs… and the millennial generation asking for roadmaps to how they can progress and grow in your organization.

Peer Learning: Building Skills, Sharing Experiences to Meet Organizational Goals
I recently had the opportunity to participate in a day-long Learning Summit designed to introduce and explore peer learning, a practice being adopted more and more by businesses. The Summit introduced participants to two peer coaching group models/methods used by organizations such as American Express, GAP Foundation, Goodwill Industries International, Microsoft and others.
Peer learning – also called peer-to-peer learning or peer coaching groups – consists of structured small group settings of 5-7 individuals with similar/shared values, priorities, challenges, generational concerns, etc. The experience, knowledge and wisdom of each group member is valued and used to support and promote learning. The sessions begin with some training about group processes, […]
Reflections on 15 Years – The Same but Different
HR Advisors Group celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Wow, where has the time gone?
Looking back, some things have stayed the same but with a twist:
- Our clients had recruiting and retention challenges in 2003 and continue to do so today, but how we need to recruit has drastically changed.
- We are continuing to look for ways to engage employees, even though what employees want from their jobs has changed.
- Employees are still looking for benefits, but not necessarily the traditional benefits offered 15 years ago. Flexible work arrangements and no limits on vacation were unheard of for most organizations in 2003 but are commonplace today.
- There continues […]
First Impressions Matter for the Long Term – Get On Board with Onboarding!
How many times have you been told by a parent or a mentor that you never get a second chance to make a first impression? Putting your best foot forward is crucial when you are job seeking, networking, or even getting together for a casual meet and greet.
We assign a lot of value to individual first impressions. We should also hold our organizations accountable to make a favorable first impression to new hires. Much thought is given to how to retain valuable employees as they grow within the organization, but what about the new employees?
One trending topic that was bandied about at this year’s HR Leadership Connection Conference […]
Connect, Share and Grow Through Networking!
HR Advisors Group recently hosted the 2nd HR Leadership Connection for Architectural and Engineering firms with the theme “Connecting, Sharing and Growing.” I’ve been in the HR field for close to 30 years (yes, I hate to admit it) and I’m still energized by the people I meet in the field. The professionalism, dedication and drive that HR professionals have for our profession, as well as for the organizations and the people with whom they work, is amazing.
I’m not aware if there have been many studies done on “why people go into the HR profession,” (and it would be an interesting study) but my guess is that the […]
Telecommuting in the Modern World
In today’s world, the issue of telecommuting is a hot topic. No matter how you feel about it, the number of organizations allowing their employees to telecommute is growing each year. According to a study by Global Workplace Analytics and FlexJobs, in 2015, nearly 4 million U.S. employees worked from home at least half the time, representing three percent of the workforce, a 115 percent increase from 2005. That’s a lot of telecommuters!
Many factors go into an organization’s decision to allow telecommuting. There are benefits and drawbacks to working remotely, however, the consensus seems to be that in order to attract and retain top talent, telecommuting should […]
